VARIOUS PROGRAMS
The Gilman Library offers various programs throughout the year. Regular programs include the Summer Reading Program, Story Hour, and “Alton’s Book Chat” book discussion group Special interest programs include NH Humanities Council Programs; and cultural, historical and local interest programs. Make sure you click on the “What’s Happening” icon located at the center of this web page for a calendar of events.
MEETING ROOM
We welcome the use of the Agnes Thompson Meeting Room for social, educational and cultural activities that are open to the public. Reservations may be made at the circulation desk or by calling 875-2550. The full policy and guidelines are available at the library.
VIDEOS
The Gilman Library offers an extensive collection of videos for circulation. Materials may be checked out for two days. The full circulation policy is available at the library.
AUDIOS
We also offer an extensive collection of audio books for circulation. Materials may be checked out for three weeks. The full circulation policy is available at the library.
STORY HOUR
Story Time is open to all ages and is held at various times on different days. This should accommodate "nap times" and allow the whole family to enjoy some stories together. Please refer to the Story Time Bulletin Board located in the Children's Room or check our website calendar to see when the next Story Time is being offered and who the guest reader will be. The length of each program will vary with the readers. You may leave between stories if you need to. Come join us as often as you can, and ENJOY! If your interested in being a guest reader please call 875-2550 or stop at the circulation desk.
ALTON and NH HISTORICAL ARCHIVES
Our Archival Room contains extensive resources on the Lakes Region and surrounding areas. For Alton genealogy research, this is a good place to start. We are pleased to say that the Alton Historical Society is also located here in this building. For more information please contact the library.
MAGAZINES
Our collection includes many titles that are available for circulation. All issues circulate for one week. As with all materials, renewals are always possible if no one is waiting!
INTERNET ACCESS
Library patrons, 18 years of age and older, may access the Internet after presenting a library card. Persons under the age of 18, require permission from a parent or guardian before accessing the Internet. Computers may be used on a walk-in basis or you may call ahead to reserve the computer. Our patrons have priority, however visitors who are 18 years of age or older may check their e-mail on a walk-in basis for up to half an hour, if a computer is available. INTERLIBRARY LOAN
If you are searching for a particular title that is not part of our library collection we can request it from another library in the state. For more information regarding this wonderful service please stop at the circulation desk.
LOW VISION MACHINE
The Aladdin Rainbow Telesensory Machine, donated by the Alton-New Durham Lions Club, is available for use during library hours. For more information regarding this color personal reader for people with low vision please stop in or call 875-2550.
FRIENDS OF THE GILMAN LIBRARY
Founded in 1980, The Friends of the Gilman Library have supported the library in many ways. Throughout the years the Friends have sponsored numerous fundraisers and programs and have proven to be a real asset to the library. For more information regarding how you can become a part of this very special group, please stop at the circulation desk. New members are always welcome. Also of interest are our book, magazine and puzzle swaps. There is an on-going book sale in the Agnes Thompson Meeting Room. Besides books, our children’s wing offers stuffed toys, puzzles and games to play with in the library. Check out our college resource center and come meet all of our wonderful volunteers! GET YOUR LIBRARY CARD TODAY
All year-round Alton residents and Alton tax payers are eligible for an individual or family card free of charge. Non-Residents (including seasonal renters) may apply for an individual or family card at a cost of $20.00, good for one (1) year. Non-Resident families wishing to have separate patron cards for each member of the immediate family may purchase additional cards for $5.00 each per year.
