Prescription Drug Disposal Program
This program is made available to all Alton citizens. The program gains its importance through the following cautions: Older, unused prescription drugs can mutate causing their properties to change. Prescription Drugs that have mutated may have dangerous side effects for even the original person for whom it was originally prescribed. Prescription Drugs when flushed or thrown away as opposed to being destroyed can find their way into our drinking water, thereby contaminating the water itself. Properly disposing of the prescription drugs minimizes the opportunity for circulation into the population through illegitimate means.
- Members of the general public, nurses, medic’s or any other trained medical professional will be encouraged to come into the Police Station (or designated area) with prescription drugs scheduled for destruction.
- Alton Central Dispatch is to call in an officer to receive the drugs from the individual.
- The assigned officer is to log the drugs into the Alton Police Possessed Property Report marking the report “FOR DESTRUCTION.”
- The assigned officer is to attach the report to the drugs and then secure the drugs in an evidence bag and place both in the evidence locker for the Evidence Officer.
- The drugs will be destroyed in an incinerator at our earliest opportunity.
