The Town of Alton is accepting resumes for the position of Public Works Director. The Town of Alton has a year-round population of approximately 5,400 and a summer population of 17,000 - 22,000. The Town is located in the Lakes Region and is on Lake Winnipesaukee. The Town is approximately 83 .9 square miles in size with mountains lakes and rivers. According to the Town of Alton Master Plan, the Town has 89 miles of Town maintained roads. This newly created position will be replacing the Highway Manager position and will be responsible for the oversight of all functions of the Highway Department which includes all facets snow removal in the winter, road reconstruction, road maintenance and more. The PWD is be responsible for oversight of two mechanics for all of the Town’s fleet maintenance and equipment needs. The Department is located at 80 Letter S Road, and has a full-time secretary to oversee the office and assist with administrative functions and responsibilities. Over a period of time, there will be a gradual structured addition of other smaller departments added under the umbrella of a Public Works Department.

Some duties and responsibilities include budget administration of a $1.4 million dollar annual budget, an annual $950,000 road reconstruction warrant article, the purchasing of materials, a high level of public contact and communications, staff management, project planning, prioritizing and ensuring full and accurate completion. The Department has resources of several Capital Reserve Funds under the authority of the Selectmen which are used for various needs such as equipment and vehicles. This position will also be responsible for enhancing moral, assigning proper and full training, mentoring subordinates, promoting safety, and more. May be required to perform physical labor

Basic requirements include but are not limited to a degree in civil engineering or a similar degree, Master Road Scholar certification, knowledge of road reconstruction, bridge repair/replacement, extensive computer software experience, extreme proficiency in oral and written communications, with significant supervisory experience in this profession or a related field of work. CDL required. A combination of education, qualifications and experience, which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is acceptable. Benefits and Salary. This position is a full-time, year-round, salaried position of 40+ hours per week and evening meetings. Six-month probationary period and a full background check. The Town offers a very good benefit package which includes leave accruals, a variety of insurances such as health, dental, life, partial short-term disability, and optional items such as a 457b, Aflac, etc. The salary will be commensurate with education, qualifications, and experience.

This position operates under the direct supervision of the Town Administrator with general direction provided by a five-member Board of Selectmen.
