Solid Waste Division

The Public Works Director and Solid Waste Center Director are responsible for this division. They are responsible for overseeing landfill monitoring, managing compliance and contracts for solid waste and recyclable materials, overseeing the Swap Shop (seasonal) as well as organizing the Household Hazardous Waste collection event and seeing that all waste is disposed of properly. Alton residents may bring their household waste and recyclable materials to the Transfer Station. All citizens using the transfer station are required to purchase and have a sticker that can be purchased at the Transfer Station or Town Hall (Town Clerk’s office). Please follow the rules and make sure all items are disposed of at the proper locations. Some items do require a fee for disposal; please see “Schedule of Fees for Disposal”

General Rules and Regulations

  • No entry without a permit ($20 fee / Valid for Two (2) Years, proof of residency required)
  • Waste accepted from Alton property only
  • All loads are subject to inspection and refusal
  • Hazardous materials and hot ashes are not accepted
  • Use facilities at your own risk
  • Follow directions of staff and posted signs at all times

Mandatory Recycling – Free Items

  • ballasts
  • aluminum cans
  • tin cans
  • glass
  • nickel cadmium batteries

Trash Disposal – FREE FOR NON-COMMERCIAL USERS

The following items are prohibited from disposal in the compactors:

  • recyclables
  • yard wastes
  • soils
  • concrete
  • bricks
  • rocks
  • trees
  • wood
  • demolition debris
  • construction materials
  • furniture
  • automotive products

MULCH – FREE DISPOSAL & PICK UP

Must be clean, biodegradable, organic waste products only. No trees, no branches, no sticks, no wood, no stumps, no plastic bags, no rocks, no ashes.
