Vehicle Registrations
NEW RESIDENTS FROM ANOTHER STATE
New residents moving to Alton from another state must register their vehicle(s) and obtain a New Hampshire driver’s license within 60 days of establishing residency pursuant to RSA 263:35.
Vehicle registration is completed at the Town Clerk’s Office, Town Hall, 1 Monument Square, Alton, NH 03809.
Required Documentation
- Please bring the following documents when registering your vehicle(s):
- Current out-of-state driver’s license
- Current vehicle registration
- Two (2) documents showing your Alton physical street address AND mailing address, such as:
- Electric or utility bill dated within 30–60 days
- Examples include: TDS, Breezeline, Wolfeboro Electric, Eversource, NH Electric Cooperative
- Oil or fuel delivery receipt
- Rent receipt (must include the physical address and show payment within 30–60 days)
- Lease agreement (must be longer than six months and one day; month‑to‑month leases are not accepted)
Vehicles model year 2000 or newer:
- Original title is required (photocopies are not accepted)
- If two owners are listed on the title, both owners must be present to sign the title application
- If there is a loan on the vehicle, the lienholder’s name, address, and your account number are required. A fax number is not required but is helpful if available.

- Credit or debit card
Please Note: Credit and debit card payments are subject to a 2.99% convenience fee (minimum $2.50). These fees are charged by a third‑party processor and are not retained by the Town of Alton.
Vehicle Inspections are currently required for commercial vehicles.
Driver’s License
A New Hampshire driver’s license may be obtained at any NH DMV licensing office.

NEW RESIDENTS FROM ANOTHER TOWN IN NEW HAMPSHIRE
New Hampshire residents who move to Alton must notify the State of New Hampshire in writing within 30 days of their new address, pursuant to RSA 261:55.
Vehicle registrations are due in the registrant’s birth month (or the business name month, if registered to a business).

Non‑Residents Registering a Vehicle
Pursuant to NH RSA 261:46 – Nonresident Registration, the State of New Hampshire may register motor vehicles owned by non‑residents upon submission of an affidavit, on a form provided by the Department of Motor Vehicles, stating that:
- The vehicle is principally garaged or kept overnight in New Hampshire, and
- The applicant owns at least one other vehicle that is registered and insured in the applicant’s state of residence
Applicants must provide current out‑of‑state registration showing that at least one other vehicle is registered and insured in their home state.
Important Residency Restriction
Per Town of Alton Ordinance SECTION 355(B)(3), campgrounds may not be used as permanent residence. Campground addresses cannot be used to establish residency for motor vehicle registration or titling purposes.
REGISTERING A NEW VEHICLE
To register a new vehicle, bring the appropriate paperwork and a photo ID to the Town Clerk’s Office.
The Town Clerk may issue the following plate types for vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of up to 26,001 pounds:
- Passenger
- Veteran
- Antique
- Motorcycle
- Vanity
- Decal
- Trailer
- Moose
- Agriculture
- Tractor and farm plates
You must complete your registration at the NH Department of Motor Vehicles in Concord or a DMV substation to obtain commercial, or construction plates.
Documentation Requirements
Model year 2000 or newer:
- Original certificate of origin, or
- Original title, or
- Title application from a NH dealership or lending institution
Model year 1999 or older:
Bill of sale and one of the following:
- copy of previous NH registration
- NH or out of state title
- VIN verification form (see Verification of Vehicle identification)
Vehicle Inspections are currently required for commercial vehicles.
TRANSFERRING A REGISTRATION
You may transfer an existing registration to a new vehicle. The first name listed on the current registration must also be the first name on the new registration.
You must provide:
- All documentation required for registering a new vehicle
- Your current registration
RENEWALS
Effective July 1, 2025, vehicle registration renewal notices are no longer mailed. Renewal reminders are only sent by email monthly as a courtesy.
Renewing in person:
- Photo ID is required
- Bring your current registration or renewal notice

Boat Registrations
The Alton Town Clerk is not authorized to process boat registrations for the New Hampshire Department of Safety.
