Special Town Election Absentee Ballot Applications

New Hampshire voters may vote by absentee ballot.

You can vote absentee in any election if you are unable to vote in person because:

  • You will be out of town on election day; or
  • You have a religious observance that prevents you from voting in person; or
  • You have a physical disability or illness that prevents you from voting in person; or
  • You have an employment commitment or must care for an adult or child during the entire time polls are open; or
  • You are confined in a penal institution for a conviction of a misdemeanor or while awaiting trial; or
  • You are a member of the Attorney General’s Address Confidentiality Program or are protected by a Domestic Violence Protective Order; or
  • The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm, blizzard, or ice storm warning for your town/ ward for election day, and you have concerns about safely traveling in the storm.

Absentee Ballot Return Deadline:

In-person – 5:00 pm day before the election

By Mail – absentee ballot must be received by the clerk no later than 5:00 PM on election day. RSA 657:21-a, V; 657:22.

Election Dates

November 10, 2025 First day to accept petitions to amend zoning ordinance, historic district ordinance or building code for consideration at March 2026 town meeting.

December 10, 2025 Last day to accept petitions to amend zoning ordinance, historic district ordinance or building code for consideration at the March 10, 2026 town meeting.

January 13, 2026 Last day for voters to petition selectmen to include an article in the town meeting warrant, provided that if a petitioned article proposes a bond governed by RSA 33:8-a, the deadline is the preceding Friday, January 9. [RSA 39:3; 40:13, II-a(b)]

January 20, 2026 Supervisors of the Checklist will be in session from 7 to 7:30 p.m. to accept voter registrations – Alton Town Hall, Depot Street Entrance, Supervisor of the Checklist Office.

January 21, 2026 – January 30, 2026 – Filing period for town and school offices (Jan. 30, 2026 Town Clerk’s Office from 3 – 5 p.m.)

January 31, 2026 School Deliberative Session @ 1:00 p.m. in the auditorium at the Prospect Mountain High School (snow date Feb. 2 @ 7:00 p.m.)

February 3, 2026 Town Deliberative Session @ 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium at the Prospect Mountain High School (snow date Feb. 4 @ 6:00 p.m.).

February 26, 2026 Last day for Town Clerk to accept voter registrations for Town & School Election during office hours.

February 28, 2026 – Supervisors of the Checklist will be in session from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. to accept voter registrations – Alton Town Hall, Depot Street Entrance – Supervisors of the Checklist Office. LAST DAY voters may register for Town & School election. No additions or corrections may be made to the checklist after this session until election day.

March 9, 2026 – Last day for Town Clerk to accept absentee ballots filed in person until 5:30 pm.

March 10, 2026 – Town Election Day at Prospect Mountain High School, Gymnasium, 242 Suncook Valley Road – voters may register at the polls (7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.)

March 13, 2026 – Last day for any person for whom a vote was cast to apply to Town Clerk for a recount. Town Clerk’s Office will be open from 3 to 5 p.m.

March 17, 2026 – Last day for 10 voters of a town to petition clerk to recount ballots on any question printed on the official ballot until 5:30 p.m.

June 2, 2026 – LAST DAY for voters to CHANGE or DECLARE party affiliation before the September 8, 2026 State Primary Election. RSA 654:34

June 2, 2026 – Supervisors of the Checklist in Session for change of party registration, additions, or corrections to the checklist. Hours 7:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. RSA 654:34

June 3, 2026 through June 12, 2026 – Filing period for all offices for State primary election. RSA 655:14; 652:20 Declaration of Candidacy RSA 655:17

June 12, 2026 – LAST DAY of State Primary Filing Period. If a person files a declaration of candidacy with the town or city clerk and is filing on the last day of filing period, he or she must do so in person. RSA 655:15, 16.

August 5, 2026 – Deadline for persons or political organizations to file nomination papers with the supervisors of the checklist for certification for placement on the general election ballot. Supervisors or a designee must be available between 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm. RSA 655:40-a, 41; 652:20

September 7, 2026 – (LABOR DAY) State Primary Election Absentee Ballot Deadline. Town clerk must be available to accept any completed absentee ballots filed in person or delivered by an absentee voter’s delivery agent between 3:00 pm – 5:00 p.m. RSA 652:20; 669:29; 657:4, 17, 17-a, 17-b, 17-c, 24.

September 8, 2026 – STATE PRIMARY ELECTION DAY – Prospect Mountain High School, 242 Suncook Valley Rd. Alton, NH. Polling Location Hours: 7:00 am – 7:00 pm. Voters may register to vote on election day. RSA 653:8; 654:7-a, 7-b.
