Drawdown Notification of Alton Power Dam, Alton and Jones Pond Dam, New Durham

The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES), Dam Bureau, is planning to adjust the water levels in Wentworth Pond and Mill Pond behind the Alton Power Dam beginning September 2, 2026. In accordance with RSA 482:13, NHDES is notifying the local governing bodies and the NHDES Dam Safety and Inspection Section that this drawdown will be a full drawdown to the base of the dam, lasting approximately 1–2 weeks. Following this period, the impoundment will be refilled to a level 2.5 feet below the current water surface elevation by leaving the stoplogs out of the dam.

A public informational meeting to discuss details of the drawdown and answer questions will be held at the Town of Alton Selectboard meeting on Tuesday, August 11th at 6:00 p.m., located at 1 Monument Square, Alton, NH 03809, in accordance with RSA 482:13.

Beginning September 2, 2026, the stoplogs in Jones Pond Dam will also be removed, resulting in a water surface decrease of approximately 4 to 5 feet from its current elevation. This reduction will support ongoing engineering evaluations and wetland studies within Jones Pond. The waterbody will remain in a lowered state until the dam is removed.

A public informational meeting concerning this change will be held at the Town of New Durham Selectboard meeting on Tuesday, August 25th at 6:00 p.m., located at 4 Main Street, New Durham, NH 03885, in accordance with RSA 482:13.

The Town of Alton is seeking bids to strip the existing asphalt shingled roof and associated trim at the Town Hall and replace it with a new roof. The new roof must be metal and be in a style that is consistent with the era and style of the building. Town Hall Metal Roof Replacement Project

1. Invitation to Bid

The Town of Alton, New Hampshire is seeking sealed proposals from qualified contractors for the removal and replacement of the existing asphalt shingle roof system at the Alton Town Hall with a new metal roofing system or approved equal, that is consistent with the style and era of the building (for example, Products that resemble metal shingles or slate style roofs).

2. Project Overview

This project includes removal of existing roofing materials, inspection and replacement of roof decking as needed, and installation of a new approved metal roof system including all flashing, trim, and accessories.

Also provide a separate price to sheath the entire roof with at least 7/16 plywood over the existing decking, replacing an rotten pieces.

4. Scope of Work

– Remove and dispose of existing roofing
– Inspect and replace damaged decking (unit pricing required)
– Install ice & water shield and underlayment as needed.
– Install approved metal roofing system according to manufacturer specifications.
– Install flashing, trim, and ventilation
– Provide full cleanup of site

**If approved, sheath the entire roof with at least 7/16 plywood, replacing any rotten decking first. ** Requires a price per square foot.

5. Material Specifications

– Approved metal roof system
– Full ice & water shield or compliant underlayment coverage preferred
– All materials must meet NH codes

– Snow and Ice breaks as required per safety standards and code.

6. Bid Requirements

– Lump sum cost
– Unit pricing for decking replacement- per square foot

– Lump sum for sheathing entire roof with at least 7/16 plywood
